Windsor Festival 2010 - A celebration of culture

What do a comedy legend, an intrepid explorer, three world class orchestras and a major political influencer have in common? They are just some of a wide range of star performers lining up to appear at this autumn’s Windsor Festival.

Windsor, 20 July 2010

As the summer winds down, one of the country’s leading arts festivals will again commence its bi-annual celebrations. Running from 18th September – 3rd October, the Festival will play host to an eclectic mix of the world’s most gifted musicians, writers and entertainers.

Featuring classical music recitals, literature, ballet and comedy, Windsor Festival has been bringing an explosion of colour and culture to the Royal Borough since 1969. The Festival offers a unique entertainment and educational experience, while enhancing community, social and commercial interests.

With Barry Cryer, Robin Hanbury-Tenison, Jenny Eclair and William Waldegrave amongst those entertaining audiences at this year’s event, other major highlights of the 2010 programme include:

• Performances by three of the UK’s top orchestras; the Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic and London Symphony. The very best of British music-making, these three world-renowned orchestras will appear in the same Festival, something which rarely happens outside the BBC Proms, and all in the unique surroundings of Windsor Castle.  Catch concerts by each on Wednesday 22nd September, Saturday 25th September and Saturday 2nd October respectively in Windsor Castle.
• Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band. The festival welcomes back Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band following a sell-out concert at the Festival four years ago.  With a career that spans over 60 years, audiences continue to love their performances which are still delivered with a dry Somerset humor.  Acker and his band will be at the Theatre Royal on Thursday 30th September.
• Beloved Clara. A story chronicling the intense relationships between Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms.  A tale that has always fascinated music lovers is brought to life by this performance of music and readings by Joanna David, Martin Jarvis and Lucy Parham. See the recital on Tuesday 28th September at the Theatre Royal.
• A strong programme for families and children. This autumn, families and children will be entertained by a children’s orchestral concert, Opera Magic, an introduction to opera for 7 – 13 year olds, at the Theatre Royal, The Pied Piper walk and a performance by spooky horror author Darren Shan. The Festival is also holding a dedicated Ascot Family Day on Sunday 26th September. An event for young and old alike, the day will also include the Schools’ Programme exhibitions and a special prize giving for this year’s winners, celebrating young artistic flair.
• King George III’s accession to the throne 250 years ago heralded an era of great progress in Windsor and the country as a whole.  To celebrate this, the Festival is holding a number of events to commemorate the life of the King, with dedicated walks that will explore his eventful life and history of his association with the town along with concerts taking place in St George’s Chapel where he worshipped and is buried.

“Our aim each year is to put together a festival to be enjoyed and embraced by all, and this year’s programme promises much to savour,” says Martin Denny, Windsor Festival Director. “We pride ourselves on our wide ranging plethora of performances from local, national and international talent and endeavour to put together a programme to entertain all who attend.”

“We remain forever grateful to those who continue to offer their support to this unique cultural event. The Festival is a time for celebration and we believe a truly delightful way for Windsor and the surrounding area to experience the arts at the end of the summer.”
